ABSTRACT

Mount Saint Vincent University was the first women's university in Canada and in the Commonwealth. Women figure prominently not only in the population served by the university but in the roots of service as well. Distance University Education via Television (DUET) began in 1982, transmitted to students via cable television service through the Atlantic Satellite Network, a commercial broadcast system distributed over the Anik C3 satellite. DUET uses one-way videoconferencing to deliver university courses to distant students. Of particular interest is offering of courses in the Women's Studies Programme offered by Mount Saint Vincent University. These courses were considered controversial for distribution over open-broadcast television because of content and format. Mount Saint Vincent University may have been unique in that the DUET system was entirely run by women, from the president to production technicians. When Université de Moncton opened its doors, the fulltime students, etc. were almost exclusively men. With the new policy of admitting women, the situation gradually changed.
