ABSTRACT
This chapter provides the reader with an introduction to the current sustainability challenges that the Gulf States are facing and an evaluation of how these states are performing when compared to other countries from around the world. It then discusses important milestones in the global efforts to overcome sustainable development challenges such as the United Nations (UN) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Finally, this chapter asks important questions that motivate the need and importance of this book, such as what are the current or previous efforts that GCC countries have taken towards sustainable development, and how can they build on these efforts to advance their local sustainability agendas in light of the global SDGs agenda?
