ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a novel model created to estimate economic and emission co-benefits from integrated waste management policy and capacity interventions. This approach provides clarity for waste planning, establishing timescales for these interventions, particularly those leading to stabilisation and reduction of disposal methane emissions in Gulf Cooperation Council countries. These are important sustainable development goals. Here we demonstrate that emissions could be reduced to 2015 levels of about 22,216GgCO2eq saving an estimated 75,122GgCO2eq in 2050 through this combined approach, with waste growth reduction policy measures potentially reducing annual costs of regional waste management budgets in 2050 by US$6.99 billion.
