ABSTRACT

The purpose of the second part of this work is to shed light on the dynamics of intergenerational relationships which the ageing process is tending to transform. This means considering private solidarities surrounding the elderly. However, this also involves understanding how changes to life cycles and socio-economic developments in Mediterranean societies are altering the way families are organised, the place and status held by each generation and the role each plays. The context is the unprecedented situation in many societies, in both north and south, where the lengthening life expectancy is leading to increasing coexistence of the generations.
