ABSTRACT

The field of school psychology greatly lags behind other fields in terms of diversity of practicing professionals. This is also evidenced by a lack of diversity in graduate programs. The lack of diversity greatly from the diverse make-up of the student populations school psychologists are serving. It is necessary that the field make intentional efforts to improve ethnic and linguistic diversity in school psychology graduate programs and subsequently practicing school psychologists. This chapter will discuss the processes of traditional recruitment and retention and how these processes have limited the number of diverse students in school psychology graduate programs, as well as lessons learned from other fields of professional psychology. This chapter will also discuss how graduate programs can utilize technology to improve their recruitment and retention of culturally and linguistically diverse students.
