ABSTRACT

Advancements in technology have made it possible to train within virtual environments. These virtual environments serve as virtual training platforms (VTPs) which have become commonly used within medical, aviation, and military settings. Recently, VTPs have become increasingly popular in education. These VTPs hold the potential to reach individuals across geospatial barriers, provide multiple opportunities for content mastery, and allow for individuals to receive coaching in a safe environment. Moreover, VTPs may decrease the probability of trainees unintentionally causing harm to clients, while developing new skills during training. Further, this chapter will discuss VTPs and the strengths and weaknesses of using such technology. Case examples of a virtual training model will be presented as well as potential implications.
