ABSTRACT

When looking to campus colleagues to help champion behavioral health programs and services, consider the three Cs: collaboration, communication, and commitment. Issues as central to student success as alcohol and other drug misuse, mental health concerns, and violence on campus should be a regular topic of discussion, and not just for professionals with explicit responsibility for student wellness. Collaborating and communicating across the institution with particular attention to such programs and services better position college leaders to both anticipate and address emerging issues. Further, such commitment, particularly as demonstrated by the college's most senior leaders, favorably positions the institution in anticipating and proactively planning programs and services that address students' behavioral health issues. The opportunity, however, is not without challenges, the greatest of which is the growing number of students confronting any number of factors compromising their academic success and college completion. After all, the impact of our students' health on their academic success should be, without question, everyone's priority.
