ABSTRACT
This introduction provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book retraces the story of Rwenzururu, offering a broad overview of the movement's origins, development and demands, especially as they were espoused in the early years from the 1960s onwards. It examines in greater detail the movement's evolution and its interactions with the Ugandan and Toro government machineries, based on a wide spectrum of written materials collected from a range of different sources. Aside from newspaper clippings and other published sources, these include documentation not hitherto consulted, correspondence and reports from central Ugandan government files, especially the Ministry of Regional Administrations (parts of it confidential), as well as from Toro kingdom archives, Rwenzururu government sources, and from Rwenzururu activists, mainly in the lowlands, who were pursuing an independent course. The book presents a basically chronological account of the movement's actions and interactions in various respects as they appeared from its archival existence.
