ABSTRACT

This chapter explores results from the limited number of empirical studies surrounding hazing in college marching bands and provides recommendations for future research and practical implications and suggestions for hazing prevention and reporting. The earliest continuously operating college marching band in the United States is at the University of Notre Dame. A coalitional group is one where member generations overlap, have a past, and are expected to engage in cooperative actions for a long period of time. Marching bands certainly meet those requirements, as there is an overlap of members as students graduate and freshmen enter. Future research on hazing in marching bands might investigate the possibility of a culture of hazing in high school marching bands as well. At the local and department levels, there are several ways marching band directors and marching band students can help prevent and report hazing incidents. As an example, Holmes offers a nine-step ERADICATE model.
