ABSTRACT

The application of the knowledge base of exercise physiology to clinics, health clubs, and athletic conditioning can significantly improve human performance and quality of life. Exercise physiology has two primary parent disciplines: physiology and physical education. Most academic programs in exercise physiology are part of departments that are or were affiliated with the applied, professional field of physical education, which now usually involves the preparation of teachers for public and private schools. This chapter presents a brief overview of the different areas of study that are a part of exercise physiology, both basic and applied areas. Most notable in exercise physiology is the autonomic control of the cardiovascular system. Study of the nervous system is important to basic researchers in exercise physiology, and new information in these areas may also have implications in the rehabilitation of individuals with neuromuscular disorders.
