ABSTRACT

Empirical data concerning objective and subjective dimensions of the social situation of individuals and social groups enable to clarify the following issues: how individual earnings are distributed and how they are evaluated by respondents, and how family incomes compare with incomes considered adequate by respondents. This chapter considers the respondents' opinions on the financial situation of their families. Using material obtained in Szczecin and Koszalin in 1964 and in lodz in the years 1965 to 1967, and the chapter describes certain patterns in the formation of assessments of individual income and judgments on adequate family income. The materials at our disposal enabled us to determine not only family incomes but also whether in the respondents' opinions these incomes are adequate. Only in the lowest earnings category are there equal percentages of people across socio-occupational categories who perceive their wages as suitable.
