ABSTRACT

Chapter 30 summarizes the aims of the handbook, which were to help lay the epistemological, paradigmatic and interdisciplinary foundations for Cognitive Translation Studies (CTS) while reflecting the current lack of unity. CTS is suggested as the preferred name of the sub-discipline treated in the handbook. CTS is described as having a basic commitment to an inseparable tripartite of meaning, language and cognition and an ethical commitment to always explicate research scope. The main theoretical and methodological strands in CTS are discussed, and unifying ideas are suggested in the form of an approach combining ideas from situated, distributed and extended cognition.
