ABSTRACT

This chapter describes climate change as a part of the problem of global injustice, arguing that it is a matter not best understood as a question of distributive or restorative justice alone, but rather of human rights. It discusses the question of responsibility and argues that a human rights theory of responsibility may provide a guide for taking responsibility for climate change injustice, and focuses more on how to take responsibility for climate change and less on whoshould take responsibility for climate change and why. The chapter also describes human rights practices of taking responsibility for injustice in ways that cultivate the political capacities necessary for an all-hands-on-deck approach to climate change. It presents the theory of just responsibility, developed elsewhere, to the problem of climate change as a problem of justice. There are many dimensions of climate change injustice and often climate change justice claims are entangled with empirical claims.
