ABSTRACT

The European integration project has been repeatedly rejected by the citizens both before and after the outcome of the British referendum that has determined BREXIT. It was a real rebellion against the masses against the elites. The most surprising thing is that elites have not been able to respond convincingly. In this concluding chapter, Daniele Archibugi and Ali Emre Benli raise the pressing question: is a fresh project to rejuvenate European integration possible? Based on the case studies elaborated in this book, Archibugi and Benli support a new integration policy based on claiming rights. They argue that citizens will only support a more united Europe if Europe is able to provide protection and citizenship rights.
