ABSTRACT

Ali Emre Benli discusses the march of asylum seekers from Budapest Keleti train station to the Austrian border on September 2015. He argues that the disobedience of asylum seekers was an act of European citizenship. Benli begins with an analysis of the reasons why asylum seekers from the Middle East region began their journey to Europe in 2015. Then, he discusses the policy of Hungarian authorities to deter asylum seekers by blocking the Balkan route. In the rest of the chapter, he demonstrates how the march enabled asylum seekers to emerge as novel political agents claiming their rights in Europe.
