This chapter explores open data related strategies for re-asserting the role of citizens within the smart city, drawing in particular on the political narrative of transparency and the role of technical standards in delivering transparency. It argues that, as smart city efforts lead to the creation of new data infrastructures, transparency and standardisation provide key sites for citizen engagement: participating not only in the use of data, but in shaping the collection, management and modelling of data assets.
