ABSTRACT

Rita, a Puerto Rican woman in Chicago, recognizes the effects of the 2008 economic recession and called for both individual and collective action:

What about all these people that are going to lose their jobs? Are they going to get unemployment, and for how long? How do we keep up the community? Like Rosario said. There’s no unity and no voice. Maybe we need stronger voices? I don’t go out there and say, “Hey let’s rally!” I’m one of the ones that learned how to survive; I don’t go out there and rally. But you know what? Maybe there’s got to be that one voice, where I can say this is a person that I can listen to, this is a meeting that I want to go to, here is going to be some kind of improvement for me and for my neighbor and for Rosario, this is going to help somebody. Maybe we need to hear that one voice out of so many that is going to make the difference.
