ABSTRACT

There is a great deal of misunderstanding about what leadership is, how it differs from management and how leadership must change to be successful as we move deeper into the twenty-first century. Leadership is usually a process which involves influencing others and happens within the context of a group. Leadership involves goal attainment and these goals are shared by leaders and their followers. The very act of defining leadership as a process suggests that leadership is not a characteristic or trait with which only a few certain people are endowed at birth. Leadership is complex and has many dimensions. One dimension is to look at the various levels of capability a leader needs in order to operate at the highest level. Although most people fundamentally have good values and a real sense of what is right and wrong, organisations still tend to overlook the importance of these traits when identifying future leaders.
