ABSTRACT

Wang Chieh, a twenty-three-year-old squad leader in an engineering company of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, died a glorious death on July 14, 1965, while saving the lives of eleven militiamen and a cadre during a blasting operation. He thus became a type of hero in the mold of Tung Tsun-jui and Huang Chi-kuang, and the great communist fighter Lei Feng. Wang Chieh was a fine son of the people, the embodiment of the excellent qualities found in a revolutionary soldier. Wang Chieh belonged to a new generation of Chinese youth who have matured so quickly under the brilliance of Mao Tse-tung's thought, which illuminates the whole of China. Wang Chieh had a profound class feeling for his revolutionary comrades. He looked on every good deed done for his comrades as part of his service to the people. In his short span of life Wang Chieh served the people and his comrades with a passionate zeal.
