ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies key religious and spiritual influences on one’s orientation to social justice. It aims to recognize the developmental sequence of such influences, from youth to present day. The personal reflection component of this activity can be augmented by assigning extra time ahead of the subsequent interaction, e.g., one week, one day, 1 hour; or, if done in class, should be given at least 15 minutes. Ongoing reflection post-activity can be expected and encouraged. Personal reflection can be done ahead of time at home or in class, or students can be allowed to find a comfortable space nearby to reflect individually. Small group sharing can be done either in class or in nearby breakout rooms/other private, quiet spaces. Large group sharing should be done in a setting that allows for all to hear and participate, with teacher facilitating discussion—e.g., classroom.
