ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to develop a working theory about African American male counselors-in-training. It presents the sociohistorical and sociopolitical context in which African American men approach graduate-level training. The chapter also aim to recognize specific barriers one may encounter when working with counselors-in-training who identify as African American men. It suggests that awareness of personal triggers related to work with counselors-in-training who identify as African American men. For efficiency, the following recommendations are made for the course instructor. The instructor should assign topics either individually for small class sizes or in pairs for larger class sizes. For ease, the instructor should also set a predetermined order for the presentations. All presenters will be asked to provide slides with space to take notes.
