ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the needs of immigrants/refugees in present-day America relating to counseling. It examines information highlighting challenges and barriers to health that immigrants/refugees face in America as well as address their own biases, assumptions, prejudices, and stereotypes connected to the immigrant/refugee populations. The chapter aims to evaluate how their counselor-in-training identity along with concepts/skills of social justice and advocacy can influence their work with immigrants/refugee populations. Throughout US history there have been shifting views on immigrants/refugees and their places in our society, the contributions they bring to it, and the many needs they may have once they arrive. Distance learning presentations can be done synchronously or asynchronously in various ways depending on instructor needs and course management or presentation tools available. Instructors can modify based on their own or student needs. Students will interview participants, located by either themselves or the instructor.
