ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to interpret the impact of power, privilege, and oppression within student’s life and the lives of his/her client(s). It illustrates advocacy processes needed to address institutional and social barriers that impede access, equity, and success for clients. The chapter also aims to distinguish strategies for working with and advocating for diverse populations. Prior to their experience counselor educators must complete a write up where they explore any personal feelings and biases they may have regarding the population they believe they will encounter during this experience or the environment they are going to be visiting. Take time to explore how their worldview and other influences have shaped their opinions such as their own cultural identities. In order to develop and learn, counselor educators must first complete an honest assessment of where they are and where they have been.
