ABSTRACT

This chapter is about an activity named 'Room for All. It is an inviting introductory activity for group experiences in which group members are encouraged to deconstruct their personal identities and select salient descriptors of their unique personal selves that they bring to the group experience. In this acitvity, participants explore three elements of their constructed identity brought to the group experience. They examine ways that dissimilar individual identities can coexist in a collective learning experience. Participants investigate the relationship between empathy, social justice, and advocacy. They also understand how experiential group activities can be facilitated in clinical or school counseling settings. This activity is appropriate for a variety of participants including clinical populations, students in school counseling settings, and graduate counselor training. Room for All is best used in a process-oriented setting, which promotes constructivism in learning. A classroom or counseling setting is ideal for conducting the Room for All activity.
