ABSTRACT

The primary objective of the Semester Social Justice Book Club is to promote diverse perspectives, multiculturalism, and social consciousness and to increase social justice advocacy. Another aim is to foster higher order thinking skills to better service underserved groups in counseling. The club's target population are the graduate students in Counselor Education Program. The instructor will give students a list of books that includes but not limited to Sisters of The Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery by Bell Hooks, A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer, and Great Speeches by Native Americans by Bob Blaisdell. Students have to read the book as a group and prepare a 50-minute presentation for the entire class toward the end of the semester. The focus should be on promoting social justice, counseling implications, and recommendations for the book’s targeted audience.
