ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an activity whose primary focus is activity to introduce how the environment is a factor in marginalization and privilege, directly impacting equitable opportunities to access resources for wellness. Students identify oppressive environmental factors that can become a barrier to a person’s wellness. They describe different resources that can be used to improve the conditions that foster wellness. Students demonstrate how having attainable resources is vital in supporting wellness and empowering others. They also identify the different parts of the environment that can either sustain marginalization or nurture privilege. The activity also helps students identify specific strategies to empower clients. It can be used as an introduction to the concepts of marginalization and privilege for beginning counselors.
