ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses an Advocate assignment designed to facilitate the development of a professional counselor identity. Specifically, the student explores different roles and responsibilities of counselors and how each role can include advocacy. The student describes how the history of the counseling profession has been impacted by advocacy. The activity helps students analyze and illustrate how advocacy can be a part of each of the roles and responsibilities of counselors (counselor, researcher, author, supervisor, educator, etc.). During week one, the student describe how the history of the counseling profession has been impacted by advocacy. In week two, the student will analyze and illustrate how advocacy can be a part of each role and responsibility (counselor, researcher, author, supervisor, educator, etc.). During week three, the student develops an advocacy plan and present this information to the class. The student develops an advocacy plan that they intend to implement within one year.
