ABSTRACT

PhotoVoice, a modified version of a community-based participatory research method, is a powerful tool for counselors-in-training to learn how to take action to create social change through photos. This activity is useful for research and program evaluation courses and/or social and cultural diversity classes. The maximum group size for this activity is eight, and the minimum group size is four. Each PV process is referred to as a cycle, which involves five steps: (1) identify a research question, (2) generate a photograph and interpretation, (3) discuss the photographs and interpretations in a focus group, (4) transcribe focus groups, and (5) analyze transcriptions. Students can be creative, and take a picture of hands or other body parts to try to describe what they intend to capture. The activity helps to centralize the marginalized voices: critical consciousness.
