ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with an activity aimed at counseling students taking a human development course. The aim of the activity is to learn how privilege and oppression operate in everyday situations. The chapter lists the setting and materials needed for the activity, the learning objectives, and a set of instructions for conducting the activity. One of the learning objectives is sensitizing students to what life is like for an oppressed group with which they do not personally identify, experiencing how privilege and oppression operate in everyday situations, and observing the coping strategies that oppressed groups utilize when they experience discrimination. Another objective is utilizing the knowledge of a particular culture to develop and implement culturally appropriate advocacy strategies for a client within a family or community.
