ABSTRACT

By utilizing weekly reflective prompts to develop a research journal, counseling graduate students will increase their awareness regarding research issues, social justice, and advocacy. Students may choose a topic that is personally interesting, as well as relevant and meaningful to his or her professional development as a school or mental health counselor. Students in first or second semester in a graduate program for mental health counselling. Often upon entering a Counseling graduate program, students may hear the words “social justice” and “advocacy.” An instructor can easily integrate discussion/assignments that empower students to translate research into tangible advocacy and social justice. This “typical” literature review assignment presents as the ideal opportunity to inspire social justice and advocacy thinking to set a foundation for the students as they move through the graduate counseling curriculum.
