ABSTRACT

Privilege activity is designed to teach students about power and privilege as experienced by themselves and others. Plan to conduct this activity in a classroom or other space that offers privacy so students feel safe to discuss the content of the activity, which may be more sensitive in nature. Students will understand how their clients may experience privilege, or lack of privilege, in their own lives and in the counseling process. Students will strengthen their ability to engage in respectful dialogue with colleagues around the topic of power and privilege. For clinical mental health or marriage/family counselors, students can consider how these privileges impact their clients’ relationships or how clients experience them when navigating their counseling agency.
