ABSTRACT

The primary focus of Power, Privilege, and Identity activity is to help students/supervisees reflect on how one’s own heritage, attitudes, beliefs, understandings, and/or acculturative experiences may impact their worldview as well as impact their work with diverse clients. Students may choose to reflect on their cultural identity and how this may have impacted their experience with power and privilege. This activity is used with graduate-level students who are participating in a process group as part of their group counseling course, or it may be used with students in a multicultural counseling course, practicum, and/or internship. Group leaders will need to bring these materials to group/supervision. Another alternative is to ask the students to bring their own balloon, marker, and safety pin to group. Group leaders may choose to provide the students with a rock and ask the students to write one word on it to help remind themselves of the activity.
