ABSTRACT

Nonprofit organizations have unique characteristics that distinguish them from both for-profit and public organizations. These features necessitate the development of human resource management strategies to address the specific challenges that arise in nonprofit organizations, such as the management of both paid staff and volunteers, the role of volunteer boards of directors in organizational governance, and the need to maintain transparency and accountability to a wide variety of stakeholders. In this chapter, we discuss these challenges, as well as emerging trends in nonprofit human resource management (NHRM), to provide an overview of common topics and to highlight critical considerations for the future of NHRM for managers, students, and researchers of the sector.
