ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how the turtle technique can be used in conjunction with storytelling to help children learn self-control and develop social-emotional skills. Stories and puppets are powerful learning tools that can open doors to conversations with children. Puppets can engage young children, strengthen their social skills, and play a significant role in managing frustration. The turtle technique uses the metaphor of a turtle going inside its shell when feeling threatened. The turtle technique is best suited for children 4 to 8 years of age and is best taught with the use of a turtle puppet. Turtle puppets do not need to be purchased. The turtle technique is not limited to anger management. One child used the turtle technique when her parents argued with one another. Another found it helpful during thunderstorms. The effective use of the turtle technique requires practice.
