      ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a brief background of Adlerian play therapy (AdPT), followed by pragmatic approaches for implementing puppet play from an Adlerian perspective. The nature of AdPT allows for an infinite number of ways in which to implement and use puppets in the therapeutic process. The use of puppets is one way play therapists intervene with children. The therapist's collection of puppets should elicit a variety of feelings and allow for a range of creative expression. The therapist can use puppets to describe, or engage in a conversation with the client about, the presenting issue. The puppet could talk to the client, to another puppet, or to the therapist. The therapist's puppet is used to provide correct answers in the event the child cannot, encourage the child, and occasionally provide incorrect answers to the host. The chapter ends with a case study in which the Adlerian play therapist uses puppet play throughout the play therapy process.
