ABSTRACT

Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) uses signature questions to help focus on the change a client wants to create. The use of SFPT provides an effective integration to meet the need of a young client. While considering the flexibility of SFPT, the counselor can recognize how the signature components of SFBT can be successfully integrated with play. SFPT is crafted with the client's specific details in mind: needs, situation or problem, developmental level, and culture and diversity. SFPT expands the basic solution-focused model and provides both verbal and nonverbal tools for expression. SFPT with puppets can be used with children as young as 4 through adolescence, with consideration given to the client's emotional and cognitive development. A variety of puppets should be available to the client. A puppet can provide important elements with the onset of counseling. It can help the client identify the problem or situation and also help in externalizing it.
