ABSTRACT

In the late 1980s, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) went through a massive expansion program. Pilots and flight engineers came to work from all over the world. This caused some minor problems, mainly due to the non-understanding of the different cultural makeup of the crew. They needed a program that would deal with these important cross-cultural issues. Finding none, they decided to develop own specifically tailored CRM syllabus with the help of an outside consultant (Allan Miller) who put together a package that deals with the traditional subjects of CRM. Malaysians are generally a collectivist society with a very strong family value. Generally Malaysians have a large Power Distance, a strong Masculinity trait, a neutral to a weak uncertainty avoidance and a low Individualism. In low individualism (IDV) cultures (collectivist societies) members prefer a tightly knit social framework in which individuals expect their relatives, clans and organisations to look after them in exchange for loyalty.
