ABSTRACT

The population maps of seemingly every country change constantly as people rearrange themselves across the landscape. Some regions are able to expand or at least sustain their population sizes, while others experience net loss. As for marginal lands, the role of population change in character izing and delimiting them has been well established (Sanchez-Aguilera, 1996; Lonsdale and Archer, 1999). In general, marginal lands are apt to suffer net out-migration, population loss, and an ageing of the remaining population.
