ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the Internet of Things, or more broadly, the Internet of People, Things and Services, in relation to human resources (HR) strategy, specifically in terms of how it will increasingly affect the design of effective performance management systems. The chapter begins by reviewing recent developments in performance management and evidence and frameworks concerning the Internet of People, Things and Services that might be applicable to HR. Next, the chapter makes the case for using a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis, in combination with major Internet of Things frameworks, to provide a balanced, critical and practical understanding of how relevant technological changes will enable and constrain performance management systems. The chapter then outlines and integrates a range of positive and negative factors, as well as organizational examples, showing how the Internet of Things will affect performance management, including aspects of measurement, automation, strategic value and potential threats to employee privacy and security. Finally, the chapter concludes by discussing the results of the SWOT analysis in terms of recommendations for improving performance management practices and policies for managers and employees via further skills development and the design of resilient systems based around users’ motivations and needs.
