ABSTRACT

In the modern Internet ecosystem involving people, things, and services (IoPTS), social media and data privacy are central topics in the workplace. Everything from employers’ use of social media to select candidates, to workplace social media policies (with possible disciplinary action), to data security has had an impact on organizations in both positive and negative ways. Numerous court cases involving employees’ personal use of social media have led to new applications of existing laws, as well as a handful of state law protections enacted to protect employees. Data privacy extends into questions about how to handle the information coming from the many devices now connected to organizations. This chapter addresses the rapidly evolving new Internet ecosystem, involving people, things, and services specifically as it relates to social media, law, data privacy, mobile devices, the workplace, and certain aspects of the life cycle of employment.
