ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the use of video as a method for thinking about and understanding disability within various contexts. Caregivers of children and young people with neurodevelopmental, learning or physical disabilities are the heart of this work. The chapter introduces dance movement psychotherapy (DMP) to a specialist school setting for children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and a moderate to profound learning disability. It also provides training to help staff understand how this form of therapy could support children with ASD. The chapter discusses a group with a staff team who had a good understanding of autism and of the children's preference for predictability to reduce their anxieties. Video interaction guidance (VIG) facilitates learning about antecedents for emotions and behaviours for children, alongside providing substance for development of effective methods to support emotional self-regulation.
