ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the Baconao Biosphere Reserve, one of the six in the country. This reserve is located in the east of the main island, between the provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo, occupying most of the area of the first of these provinces. It is one of the most densely populated biosphere reserves, which determines a high level of human-nature interaction, with diverse economic activities, including agriculture. The distinctiveness of the use of agricultural and natural biodiversity by farmers, community members and other social actors is also discussed.
