ABSTRACT

Strategic planning is currently a central concept in the Stockholm region planning context. ‘Towards a Sustainable Stockholm Region in an Uncertain Future’ serves as a guiding principle for the present regional planning process, where three Sector Strategies have been defined by the Office of Regional Planning and Urban Transportation (1999):

The long term objective is a high level of wealth and prosperity for the inhabitants of the region, both today and in the years to come. It is necessary to create an economic growth within the frameworks set by nature and with a fair distribution of the resources that are created by the growth. Against this background, the emphasis is being shifted from physical planning to questions of economic development, social conditions and the environment.

Three areas – economy, environment and social conditions – have been specially studied with the aim of trying to establish a common approach to the long term goals and to the efforts that are required in order to steer development in their direction.
