ABSTRACT

The explicitly religious dimensions of Ivan Reitman’s 1984 film Ghostbusters have received little critical attention. This chapter will demonstrate that each of the four principal characters in Ghostbusters reflects a critical approach to the paranormal attested within Spiritualism of the 19th century, ultimately arguing that the character of Ray Stantz (played by Aykroyd himself) most closely reflects the open-ended ethos of the movement, as he values experience over the assignment of meaning.
