ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the strategic role played by these bodies and whether their existence means that women's needs are being addressed in a comprehensive and co-ordinated fashion. The current Labour government in the United Kingdom is also committed to a programme of 'modernising government' to ensure that decision-making is more integrated and that government provides high quality and efficient services to the public. The judiciary in the United Kingdom is dominated by men. Women are grossly under-represented at all levels of judicial work. The development of policy is the responsibility of the government or more specifically, government Ministers, their departments and Cabinet committees. One of the most significant recent developments within the policymaking framework of the United Kingdom has been the development of regional assemblies in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. A variety of other measures have been adopted in the United Kingdom to supplement the anti-discrimination legislation.
