ABSTRACT
When Mehdi Jomaa took office as the new head of government, two key themes stood out as urgent and challenging: the economy and security. This chapter examines to what extent and how successfully Jomaa employed Tunisia’s foreign policy and its reputation as perhaps the only successful ‘Arab Spring’ country in order to tackle the challenges that the transitioning country was facing. This chapter follows an actor-centred foreign policy perspective, focusing on the head of government himself. It examines Jomaa’s rhetoric and diplomatic activities to promote Tunisia abroad and seek foreign assistance for the country’s economy and security.
