ABSTRACT

Empirical studies on managing coopetition have identified different effective mechanisms to manage tensions and to balance cooperation and competition. While these studies have significantly advanced our understanding of the functioning and management of coopetition, they frequently concentrate on a single level of analysis—mostly the level of the individual or the inter-firm level. We draw attention to the links and interdependencies between different levels and differentiate the industry, the inter-firm, and the individual level as interdependent coopetition arenas. In this chapter, we consolidate the current knowledge on managing coopetition for each of these levels and then show how these levels can purposefully be connected in order to derive implications for practice and research.
