ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to make both a theoretical arid an empirical contribution to the tradition of neighbourhood effect research. At the intra-urban level such context effects have mostly been studied in relation to residential segregation patterns. This study will be based on the entire adult population in the area, and the economic performance of all these individuals will be studied over a five-year period. The chapter focuses on the issue of socialization of children. Social network perspectives could be seen as a theoretical approach relative to socialization theory. The concept of stigmatization is related to the process of stereotyping and focuses on the negative attributes that are ascribed to certain individuals and categories. The study on neighbourhood effects will focus on a few aspects of the socio-ecomomic performance of individuals residing in and moving between different types of neighbourhoods in the Stockholm area.
