ABSTRACT

The three non-governmental organizations, Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP), Dhaka, Centre for Policy Research (CPR), New Delhi and IIDS have collaborated from 1990 in the study on utilizing the waters of the Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna (GBM) region. The general objectives of the Water Resources Development study, conducted with the financial assistance of the Ford Foundation, are to assess, at the non-governmental level, the needs, prospects and modalities of harnessing the eastern Himalayan rivers for the socio-economic advancement of the people of the region. The study aims to create better understanding among the general public about the problems and prospects for the development of water resources of the region and provide recommendations on the approaches and modalities of feasible co-operative efforts among Bangladesh, India and Nepal.
