ABSTRACT

In early 1960s the SSP, the terminal dam at Navagam in Gujarat along the vast network of Narmada Valley development complex created a contentious situation between M.P. and Gujarat. A meeting in Bhopal in 1963, convened by the Government of India (B01) resulted in the resolution of major contentious issues between M.P., Gujarat and Maharashtra. However, the 'impolitic' public statement of Gujarat Chief Minister (CM) Balwantrai Mehta on return to Ahmedabad claiming the victory of Gujarat ruffled the feelings of M.P. whose media worked up hysteria against the Nayagam (SS) dam. M.P. Government also raised a controversy about the total amount of water available in the river and claims of sharing its water.
